I photographed this series in 2026, in the Cilincing district of Jakarta, Indonesia, among construction sites and the deep waters of the port, at a child's eye level.
Whether climbing the machinery, jumping from one platform to another, or diving off the quays, their movements stay precise, repeated, familiar : this is ground they know by heart. Some stay in the water for hours, others scale excavator arms the way one might climb a tree.
I found the contrast striking with what's happening at the same time in my home country, France, where the shrinking radius of children's independence and the growing number of spaces closed off to them worry me. Here, by contrast, no place is too dangerous, too industrial, or too adult-only to stay out of children's reach.
Made up of images shot on the fly, radiating a deep sense of carelessness and joy, this series questions the gap between two worlds, from total freedom to growing caution.
